So having lived off a debit card in the Netherlands (shock horror!!) I’ve finally managed to get an American Express Gold charge card. You get 8000 Membership Rewards points upon sign-up without spending a single penny. (Yes this is far less than other countries, but at least it’s completely free)
Two months ago I posted a quicktip on how to avoid KLM’s booking fees on transatlantic flights by booking on Delta. Thanks to reader Ralph who commented in the post to provide the missing information I needed — how to extend this to all flights.
You might have received an email from Flying Blue about their most recent prize draw “Catch him and fly”. If not, here’s the link to the competition.
I’m sure this won’t be news for most of you, but I discovered this trick by accident. I’d noticed that KLM (KL) imposes a €10 “booking fee” on all online transactions. You can avoid this simply by performing your online booking on Delta (DL) instead as they have codeshare ventures between them.

I mentioned in my post that there’s a possibility that even the lowest level Flying Blue members might be able to avoid the charge. Well, one of my friends emailed me to have a rant about the change, but inadvertently provided the conclusive proof…
I mentioned in a post a couple of weeks back that Flying Blue were honouring their misguided status match.
Ghetto IFE points out that KLM is adopting a low-cost carrier approach to checked luggage. Whilst that’s true I wouldn’t go as far as calling them LCC, just negatively influenced by the USA model.
Flying Blue recently ran a status match promotion for anyone wanting to get a fast-track gold status. News spread pretty damn quickly! Then they decided to restrict it to Scandinavian residents, which is what was they intended all along, and also bring the closing date forward, then ending the promotion outright. Well according to this…
